Dear Minister's Wife ~ Idolatry!!!

Eww! that’s a compelling blog title, not!

“Do not, I repeat, do not let anyone define who you are except Him. When you allow others to define who you are you have given them authority over you so stop.”

After I wrote this ^^ sentence in the previous issue I began to chew on how tempting it can be to give others permission to define us. The part that stuck in my crawl was the giving of authority to someone or something else. Isn’t this idolatry? To understand idolatry we must take a journey to the root word, which is not popular. Perhaps idolatry is considered old school but I have news for you - it’s an epidemic.

Let’s break it down: an idol is an image or representation of a god used as an object of worship.

We are inundated with what we call distractions and busyness (my un-favorite word) all important stuff on our google calendar. Let me be clear- when the things on our calendar become more important than the pursuit of holiness, there’s a problem: idolatry.

Idolatry can be hidden issues of the heart like fear, anger, unforgiveness, jealousy, or the outward obvious money driven materialism that becomes our god.

The struggle is real! How do we overcome? We have a smack down LOL.

1-Recognize: recall the first great command that Jesus gave “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind’.

(Matthew 22:38a Phillips)

2-Repent: it has been lost among Christians. If we want to be right with our father God we must establish the practice of repentance. To repent we must be more than sorry, we must deeply regret permission for idolatry; turn from it and return to God.

Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord,

(Acts 3:19 NIV)
