Confessions of a PW ~ Can We Exclude Patience?

First of all, don't you just love my photo???

P.A.T.I.E.N.C.E - suffering without getting angry or upset...

synonyms: forbearance, tolerance, endurance, long suffering, self-restraint, phlegm. Wait! What? What does phlegm have to do with my patience? phlegm's a mucus that forms in your head and chokes you while you're sleeping, right? then how did snot end up on the "patience" list? I googled it: Phlegm is "believed to be associated with a calm temperament". There ya go, patience.

Years ago, while facilitating a Kay Arthur study, we came across the word endurance (synonym of patience) in the Greek language pronounced hoop-om-on-ay. "It describes the capacity to continue to bear up under difficult circumstances, not with a passive complacency, but with a hopeful fortitude that actively resists weariness and defeat" (Strong's #5281)

This word has stayed with me over the years because our group tweeked the meaning to be applicable to our lives: to hold up under, to remain. Our translation became "hold on, your acrylic nails might be getting weak but you keep holding on no matter what because you are stronger".

Here's where I personally need to camp out. "Patience describes a person who has the power to exercise revenge but instead exercises restraint." (Strong's #3115)

Patient endurance is what you need now, so that you will continue to do God’s will. Then you will receive all that he has promised. (Hebrews 10:36 NLT)

(the photo? my childhood home had one (1) bathroom, the back up plan was that little white building called the out house. You either went out there when you were in a hurry or you had to exercise a lot of patience)
