Confessions of a PW ~ Goodness Is a Tasty Fruit...

I've lacked understanding on how "goodness" fits in with the Fruit of the Spirit until I began weeding out what I thought it meant...

In the words of Paul, "For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out."

(Romans 7:18 NIV) I swear he was straight up talking about me!!

Since nothing good naturally dwells in us, how is it possible that "goodness" is a fruit we possess and how do we put it into practice? A consistent, intentional relationship with Christ makes it possible for goodness to rise to the surface in real life situations.

Gaining a greater understanding of the word sheds light on what "goodness" is to look like in our lives:

Strongs concordance translation G-19 says goodness is used, in the NT, of regenerate persons (born again, believer, Christ follower).

  • The state or quality of being good

  • Moral excellence; virtue;

  • Kindly feeling, kindness, generosity, joy in being good

  • The best part of anything; Essence; Strength;

  • General character recognized in quality or conduct.

Summum bonum is a Latin expression meaning "the highest good". Of Christianity, the highest good is usually defined as the life of the righteous and/or the life led in Communion with God and according to God's precepts. (

The expression of goodness is motivated by an ongoing connection with Jesus Christ, instigated by the Holy Spirit at work within us.

Today's goal: be alert to those on our path needing the highest form of good- share Jesus with a hurting soul.
