Confessions of a Pastors Wife~ on being a sheltered child
Psalm 91 has been my go to chapter for years and with each passing day I understand why. Everytime I read this passage my confidence in my God is renewed.
Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust.” (Ps 91:1-2 NIV)
As many times as I've pondered this passage I'm amazed that I haven't noticed how the different Names of God are used. Let's dive in ~
In these first two verses He reveals Himself as Elyon the "Most High" (v1) which means He is the strongest of the strong, surpassing all others, above all other powers and authority. This name reveals God's strength, sovereignty and supremacy.
Shout it out loud followers of Jesus Christ:
I live under the protection of The Most High God
Shaddai or Almighty (v1). The name Shaddai means “All Powerful” Omnipotent, All Sufficient One. The promises rooted in the name Shaddai is the Almighty can do everything He has promised. No man or other power can block, prevent or defeat His ways. He is our God.
I dwell in the shadow of Almighty God
Lord (v2) Yahweh or Jehovah His name means, “I am who I am” or “I will be who I will be.” God is THE One who is there for His people. In the New Testament the Lord Himself appeared among His people as Emmanuel, “God with us.”
The Lord is my refuge and my fortress
Elohim is “God,” (v2) The Maker of the universe and the Incomparable, Matchless Creator of all life. The Name emphasizes God’s power and strength which is evident in creating, from nothing, the heavens, the earth and all that is in them.
I trust in the God who created all things
The Most High God is our protection because we dwell in the shadow of Almighty God. He is our refuge and our fortress and we can trust the God who created all things. Bless the Lord, He is our shelter. Please accuse me of hiding out in the place of safety; I am a sheltered child with boundaries and it's here I find wisdom to grow, instruction to flourish and correction when I screw it all up.
