Over the weeks we've looked at Psalms 103 devotionally. Let's dive into v 8- which presents significant insight of our trustworthy God.
The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
Four characteristics of our God:
Mercy - It's His very nature. Compassion or forgiveness shown toward someone whom it is within one's power to punish or harm. Not only does he extend mercy, He is mercy! - "Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need." (Hebrews 4:16 ESV)
Gracious - To be gracious means 'to favor,' ‘to show kindnesses’ to an inferior, and ‘to be compassionate. Why is He gracious? because He is love. No matter how we act or feel He continues extending grace toward us, all the while drawing us back to the heart of the Father.
Slow to anger - most of my Christian life I've held onto God's attributes described throughout the Word; especially that He isn't mad at me. Ever feel like He's mad at you and looking for a reason to punish you on a regular basis? that. It just isn't true. When we grab hold of the Truth of who He is through the study of the Word we'll begin to see that He is a very patient, caring, compassionate, grace-filled AND grace giving God.
Steadfast love - or unwavering. His love is not fickle as the love from another human. His love is never conditional and is long suffering. Through sins, mistakes and human weakness He continues to meet us where we are with a love that cannot and will not fail, ever.
Bless the Lord!
